The Local Truth: How to Get Married in Big Sur Responsibly

A collaborative Guide by Noelle Mosolf Super 8 Films and Isabelle Perez x Super 8

Eloping on the cliffs of Big Sur, or in a grove of towering redwoods is romantic, gorgeous and seems like a dream come true for many. But for the people living there, and the plants and animals, it can be another story. Here are a few tips for making your day easy, and also responsible.

1. Choose venues that have their own features/sites.
Glen Oaks for redwoods, Fernwood for river and meadow, Big Sur River Inn for River and lawn, etc. This will allow you time and space in a well maintained area meant for privacy.

2. Choose A WEEKDAY, or even better yet, a weekday during the off season! This can make or break your elopement. Less crowds, less traffic, better rates at hotels, vendors have more availability, etc.

3. Plan ahead! Big Sur is built alongside the beautiful Highway 1. Big Sur is no stranger to mother nature having her way. Road closures, over night road closures, oneway traffic, etc. Check quick maps via the CalTrans website. It has live updates and estimated reopening time for any road closures and road work. For reassurance, call local businesses who you may be working with if you have any questions about the road, ask people who work in the area and or live in the area can be very insightful.

4. Communication. Big Sur has almost no cell signal. It is critical to plan ahead and communicate thoroughly prior to your big day. Wifi is few and far between. Everyone (officiant, photographer, family members) knowing when and where to be is crucial.

5. Donate to a local non-profit. The Esselen tribe, The Big Share, or Big Sur Fire are great places to start!

6. Use local vendors when possible. Many wedding vendors live and work in Big Sur. They know the ins and outs, as well as the added bonus of no travel fees. See our list below!

7. Skip confetti, rice and flower petals to keep local ecosystems healthy.
