Bernardus Carmel Valley Vineyard Wedding

Carmel Valley will always be home for me. I grew up on a property that backed against the river and all of my childhood days were spent outside exploring with the hills as the backdrop. Working at Bernardus is a perfect combination of Carmel Valley relaxation and European style elegance.

Santa Barbara Elopement Love

I cannot recommend eloping enough. Especially in Santa Barbara. Being an elopement videographer allows me to be completely present for the true meaning of the day—LOVE.

Cici and Nat are undeniably in love and adorable and kind and fun, and their day of marriage perfectly reflected that. Please enjoy their super 8 film. If you haven’t visited the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, please do, it is magical. We started at the garens and ended at the Santa Barbara Courthouse right in downtown Santa Barbara.

Cici and I connected through instagram and our Sicilian American roots. She is a multi-talented woman and even has her own cookbook! Check out her work here.

Big Sur Food and Wine 2021

When the opportunity to film Opening Night of Big Sur Food and Wine arose, I immediately said Yes!

Big Sur Food and Wine is “ a project of the Big Sur Food & Wine Foundation, a 501c-3 non profit charitable trust created to to be a vehicle of support to the Big Sur community. Its intention is to stimulate the local economy and donate event proceeds to support local nonprofits that benefit Health, Safety, Education and Arts.”

I grew up right down the coast from Big Sur and some of my fondest memories of young adulthood took place there. Also, filming a party filled with booze and food sounds like a dream doesn’t it?

Please enjoy the super 8 footage of the night and be sure to check out the awesome events put on by the Big Sur Food and Wine team.

Spell of Flowers: Desert Adventure

I am a self proclaimed Spell of Flowers enthusiast and collector. The scarves, bandanas, wraps and slips are the most luxe silk charmeuse, the colors are luscious and vibrant, and best of all, they are dyed using plants and botanicals in small batches.

For this film I wanted to show a woman in her natural element, and what better person than my friend and photographer, Evynn LeValley. She is a photographer, gardener, cat lover, traveler, real estate agent and my adventure partner.

We spent the day hiking and exploring, while she took photos with her film camera. She also loves Spell of Flowers and wears her silk almost everywhere, so it was a natural fit. Like I have said before, my dream job is to be able to film small business owners in their element, so here we go! I also included some iphone photos of us being ridiculous because we are waiting on Evynn’s film to come back from the processor.

All video footage was processed and scanned by Pro8mm and filmed by me on Super 8 film.

Freestone Handmade On The River

It is almost impossible not to love the jewelry from Freestone Handmade. The pieces are intricate and the colors are luxe. When I had the opportunity to work with Saige, I think I actually shrieked. My sister had turned me on to Saige’s jewelry and I wanted all of her creations before she reached out to work together.

Hanging out with Saige and filming her doing what she loves was a beautiful reminder that work doesn’t have to be something that fits into society’s molds. I love filming for small businesses, especially with people like Saige. Check out her amazing jewelry here.

Stuck: Short Film

I was just talking with my niece about procrastinating and working under pressure. I do best with timelines and lists and boxes I can check off. The past 2 years have been a pressure cooker for most people. I have been lucky and privileged in a lot of areas during the pandemic: my job went online, my mom could help with childcare, we live in a place where we can go outside and the weather is pleasant year round. With that being said, the first year of the pandemic was insane on every level, especially with a 2 year old. However, on a creative level I feel like the pandemic forced me to discover creative outlets, when before I would rely on travel for stimulation. I got back into super 8 big time, and even entered a film festival. I was not selected… but at least I entered right?

The festival is called Straight 8 and the rules are as follows:

“Make a short film on one cartridge of super 8mm cine film with no editing, no re-takes, no grade, no post-production. The visuals for your film are completed in-camera, shooting in story order, editing only with each pull of the camera's trigger. every shot you take becomes your film. The film does not record sound so you then submit a separate, original soundtrack, still without having seen your film.we get your film processed at the lab and we line up your soundtrack to the first frame of picture. The first time you see even your own film will be together with the audience at one of our packed premieres, like the one we hold at cannes film festival, if it's good enough.”

So basically, you shoot a roll of super 8 film in one take, you don’t even know how it looks or if it turns out, and then you send in a score that you HOPE lines up, and voila, you wait half a year and see it after the films are selected.

Mine was not selected, and of course I was disappointed, but once I finally got to see the footage, and hear the score with it, I was STOKED! Not only did the film look great, but in the story I was able to see myself on a few levels. I originally wanted the plot to be a mother going through her daily routine with her baby, and leave the viewer wondering what happened to her partner. After watching it I realized the film is a total reflection of how I was feeling as a mother during that period. I felt trapped by circumstances, nostalgic for the days of romance and freedom, and just plain exhausted. Now, almost a year later I have echoes of those feelings, but I am a different woman and my relationship with motherhood is different as well. I am inspired and excited about this stage of motherhood, when before I couldn’t even imagine feeling this way.

My sister Rachel acted in the film and her partner has a cameo in a past super 8 that she watches. He also wrote and played the gorgeous score. Their adorable daughter makes her acting debut, making it truly a family affair. Thanks for being the best sports and for telling my story.

Does this version of motherhood resonate with you? I would love to hear your opinions, critiques and comments!

Meg and Charlie

I am a big softy now when it comes to babies. I used to be lukewarm about all things baby until I had my own, and now the mere glimpse of a baby smile or toe has me tearing up. When Meg asked me to help capture her sweet babe and her amazing quilt at their home, I couldn’t believe my luck. I know love between mothers and babies is unparalleled, but seeing it through a super 8 lens was heartwarming to say the least.

Meg is a creative force, which is apparent when you meet her, and even more so if you are lucky enough to be invited to her home. It is welcoming and stunning and completely and truly Meg. She is an artist on many levels and I hope that comes across in this film.

Thank you Meg and Charlie for being the cutest duo that could ever be.

Lilac and Dahlia at Home

I am a huge believer in indulgence. I love it in many forms. Food, spa, wine, time alone, swimming in warm oceans, bingeing Bachelor in Paradise— all my favorites. When the pandemic first hit and businesses were shutting down, Elizabeth of Lilac and Dahlia created at-home facial kits for her loyal customers. This may not sound that revolutionary… you can buy spa products online, but if you know Elizabeth you know nothing compares to a facial from her. Hence, Lilac and Dahlia at Home. These short films were made to showcase the feelings of pampering that Elizabeth provides, even when she can’t be the one applying the products.

These cuties are actual customers of Lilac and Dahlia, and so kindly let me film them using their at-home facial kits. Lilac and Dahlia is a woman owned skincare spa in Pacific Grove, California. If you need a treat, or know someone who does, book a facial today.

Leslie + Shawn's Big Sur Dream

Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but sometimes weddings are not worth it… the stress, the money, all the moving parts can combine and create an exhausting whirlwind where the couple doesn’t even remember what the day is for. As someone who is lucky enough to capture wedding days, I witness the good, the bad and the ugly, but sometimes I film a wedding and I am overwhelmed by the love between the couple, the joy of the guests, and the beauty of the day.

Leslie and Shawn’s wedding was one of these.

It was impossible to not instantly like Leslie and Shawn. They had fun the ENTIRE day and never once did I see the stress of having a wedding far from home interfere with the real reason of the day. Their love was obvious, funny, affectionate, and contagious. They stayed at Glen Oaks in Big Sur and held their wedding at Loma Vista Gardens. Classic Big Sur. Redwoods, the river, views of the mountains and an outdoor wedding and reception all came together for a gorgeous day.

Also, I finally got to work with my husband Ryan of Ryan Chard Smith Photography! We usually keep our work lives separate, and I was a little nervous about combining forces, but it was so easy and fun. His photos are magical and I am so lucky we got to capture these two together.

Thank you to all of the amazing vendors that made this day seamless and beautiful.

T + F's Wedding at Big Sur River Inn

Some couples and some weddings inspire feelings of romance, and some inspire feelings of I-wish-they-were-my-friends-in-real-life. Tamar and Fred’s wedding did both. When I first met them, I couldn’t believe how relaxed they were. They never elevated to an even slightly stressed level, and if anything, relaxed more into the day. She strolled through the redwoods barefoot, not caring that her dress was catching on pine needles and he smiled and went along with river wading, tree stump climbing and dancing in the forest.

Music:

Hans Zimmer: You’re So Cool

Grateful Dead: Sugar Magnolia and Not Fade Away

All in all, I had an amazing time filming their wedding and hanging out with Tamar and Fred’s friends and family.

It didn’t hurt that I got to work with an amazing team of vendors, including my BFF Evynn LeValley. Her gorgeous photos are below.

A+B's Santa Barbara Rooftop Wedding

This summer felt like an escape from monotony and one big step into feeling like myself as an individual and not just a mom of a toddler. I recently decided to go all in with my super 8 business, quit my full time teaching job and get back to my wilder and more free spirited ways. Going to Santa Barbara for Audrey and BJ’s intimate, rooftop wedding at the Kimpton Canary in Santa Barbara was a major part of this!

I was beyond thrilled when Audrey reached out to me about filming their wedding. It sounded like a dream, and in reality it was even better. Under twenty people, everyone was warm, relaxed and ready to have fun, and we were all celebrating under the Santa Barbara sun.

Burn Me Up by Big Haunt

Another reason I was so excited to be a part of Audrey and BJ’s day, was the fact that they had hired Malorie Kerouac to photograph their wedding. Malorie’s photos are stunning and timeless, and she shoots film and digital. I was actually intimidated by her and her gorgeous work, until I met her and immediately felt like we were kindred spirits.

All photos by the talented Malorie Kerouac

As anyone can see in the film, or the photos, Audrey is gorgeous. She has a quiet magnetism about her and it is easy to see why BJ loves her. They told us that they were not doing vows during the ceremony, and I assumed it was because they weren’t sentimental, but it turned out it was really because they KNEW they would cry the whole time if they did. They were so obviously in love. It was an honor to witness it.

Being able to travel a few hours from home and feel like I was a million miles away was exhilarating and and affirming. My sister and nieces road tripped down with me and my daughter and we had four glorious days of swimming, EATING, strolling in the warm night time air, and exploring.

Here are the amazing people that made the day possible. Kendalyn was a hilarious angel who I want to hire to organize my life and crack jokes while she does it. She is Audrey’s friend and a professional event planner and a delightful person.
